Istanbul being the only city located on two continents (Europe and Asia) is divided by Bosphorus strait which connects the Aegean and Mediterranean seas to the Black Sea. For bird watchers it is a very important location to watch the migration of many species including raptors for 5 months a year. There are some wetlands and one forest which host many resident birds and provide shelter during migration

Belgrade Forest is a mature forest mostly covered with sessile oak (Quercus petraea) as well as chestnut and other trees. It has been the water reservoir during Byzantine and Ottoman times, several historical aqueducts are still in good shape.
